Rockley (Accra) Beach, Barbados
One of the highlights of the Bajan South Coast must surely be Rockley Beach, where swimmers and surfers can peacefully co-exist given that the bay offers both calm-water areas that are perfect for the swimmers and exciting wave action for the surfers.
Rockley Beach, which is also known as Accra Beach, does more than cater to swimmers and surfers, however, and this beautiful seashore resort area is also known for its eclectic local restaurants, intriguing craft stores and inviting infrastructure.
Rockley also offers a plethora of watersports, and adventurous beach goers can try their luck at such energetic seaside activities as windsurfing, snorkeling and boogie boarding. Those who prefer to explore the area without getting wet can choose between Hobie cat rides and sailboat excursions, and the single-seater Sunfish sailboats are extremely popular among visitors. All who swim, surf or sale at Rockley should, however, keep in mind that the local surf action can sometimes cause rather dangerous rip tides that may catch the unwary off guard.
Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for hire by the casual Rockley visitor, and a couple of chairs, an umbrella and several of Rockley's signature Bajan rum cocktails - sold from the kiosks that sprout from the crisp, reddish sand like magical mushrooms - will cost considerably less than a fortune.
A favorite pastime enjoyed by both visitors and locals alike is to lounge on the beach all day and then visit one of the local hotels, which are literally a few feet away from the seashore, for a relaxing evening of Caribbean calypso interspersed with even more captivating cocktails.
As far as Rockley Beach accommodations go, visitors can choose between hotels that hug the coastline - and that try to tempt their guests away from the beach by offering them such delights as heated pools, reggae bands and floor shows - and beach villas and apartments that provide a sense of privacy even while being located exactly in the middle of all the beach-action. There is ample parking for day-trippers, and showers are also available for those who are only visiting the area for a short while.
Rockley Beach is one of the most popular seaside resort areas in Barbados, and, although it may sometimes become rather crowded, the Rockley experience is not to be missed and may even turn out to be the most memorable moment of a Bajan beach adventure.
