Dover Beach Barbados
One of the most popular attractions of the relatively small South Coast Bajan region known as the St Lawrence Gap is Dover Beach, and this gorgeous Caribbean beach attracts both surf and sports enthusiasts alike.
The beauty of Dover Beach is that it's not only the sparkling sea, scintillating surf and soft golden sand that call to tourists - although these are, without doubt, the area's prime attractions - it's also the nearby soccer and cricket fields as well as the quaint local curiosity shops and eclectic Bajan eateries. The St Lawrence Gap area, which is only a little over 1km long, is, in fact, one of the island's most popular tourist hangouts, and "The Gap" offers visitors exhilarating nightlife - party nights, reggae lounges and live DJ events abound - to compliment the long, lazy days spent languishing at Dover Beach.
Dover Beach also offers visitors enjoyable, lively surf that is hardly ever extreme, and those up for more than just soaking up the sun's royal rays can choose between such exciting activities as boogie boarding, windsurfing and jetskiing. As with many other Bajan beaches, Hobie cats and sail boats are also available for hire or charter and provide a pleasant alternative to just sun-worshipping silently while lying on the inviting white-slatted deckchairs, although the latter will probably sound almost overwhelmingly attractive to most weary nine-to-fivers.
Daytrippers to the beach can rest assured that their every need will be taken care of without their having to return to civilization as most - if not all - beach necessities are available either for sale or for hire from kiosks that are situated literally a few feet away from the water's edge. Those who are thinking of spending several days in the St Lawrence Gap area will surely be able to find a room or two at one of the luxury hotels that populate the area, and there is nothing better than being able to lie on one's balcony and be entranced by the yellow-blond of the beach's sand as it contrasts with the azure-through-indigo of the sea and the light mauve of the evening sky.
Paying a visit to Dover Beach - and "The Gap" - is a must for every tourist, and, although this Dover may not sport any white cliffs, it has peace, charm and tranquility enough to recharge the batteries of the most jaded of world travelers.
