Atlantic East Coast
The East Coast of Barbados faces out into the Atlantic Ocean, where huge waves roll onto the beach having travelled miles across the water. As such this part of the coast doesn't make for ideal swimming conditions - unless you are particularly strong or know the area well - but is a favourite for surfers, particularly around Bathsheba where the 'Soup Bowl' is the site of many local and international championships.
The windy, wilder beaches make a break from the calm, flat seas of the South and West, and are a great place to walk, go beachcombing or to take a picnic. There are also a number of natural pools formed by storms that allow for safe bathing, away from the dangerous currents in the open sea.
The area around Cattlewash is particularly stunning and the combination of beautiful landscapes, great climate and fresh breezes have made it something of a health resort, and is a popular getaway for locals.
